There's a definite cap to how high you can raise, and it isn't to the top.
Everything is decided by gms, and sgs, at the end of the day.
The highest rank a player character can get, without a patrician character, is centurion of the legion (one person) or Captain of the constables (one person).
A player patrician can also only achieve the rank of assistant to the role, not the role itself.
That being said, they might enjoy it, but based on the reddit post, this isn't what they're looking for.
